Chapter Seventeen

—Shelly—

Charlie is looking at me expectantly. Waiting for me to share my fantasy. I hope this doesn't change the way things seem to be going between us. I feel so safe with him. I don't know who is after me or why, but I feel like being here with him is where I belong.

I look down at him and all his tattoos, wondering what they stand for. What they mean to him. I get the feeling they tell a story. His story. I hope one day he will open up and share his truth with me.

“You want to know what my fantasy is, and I promised to tell you. But first...see what you think.” I move around to the front of him and take his hands in mine. Pulling him to his feet, I lead him to the bathroom.

We stand side by side and he looks so different in comparison to me with all his tattoos. I left him a goatee so his face isn’t completely clean shaven, but it is nice to see the rest of his face. I cut his hair to about his chin.

He looks pale and I am afraid he hates it.

I frown. “You hate it.”

“No,” he says with a shake of his head. “It’s just different. Will take some getting used to.”

“Are you sure, because if you hate it…”

He cuts me off when he turns into me and plants his lips down on mine. Soft and sweet. Pure and true. Charlie pushes his tongue into my mouth and I let him, wanting this more than he knows.

His hands glide up the sides of my throat, holding my face in place as his tongue explores and tastes mine. His breath tastes like garlic bread and beer, but I don't care.

One hand moves down to slide up the back of the t-shirt I am still wearing, cupping my butt cheek. He squeezes, and I respond by hiking my leg up on his hip.

Our kiss is deep and intense. The strokes of his tongue slows until he breaks away to catch a breath.

“It’s getting late.”

“Yeah,” I say breathlessly.

“I’ll take the couch.”

My brows draw inward. “Charlie, the bed is big enough for the two of us.”

“I don't trust myself to just sleep if I get in the bed with you.”

“Oh...well.” I don’t know what to say. How am I to respond to that? “I haven't told you my fantasy yet.”

He makes that funny noise in the back of his throat. “Tell me tomorrow. Go ahead and wash up for bed, I’ll clean up the mess in the kitchen.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, Goddamnit,” he snaps, and I shrink back from him.

“Okay,” I whisper as he stomps to the kitchen. I don’t know what I did wrong. Shaking his bad mood off, I go about my business. Maybe he doesn't want to move too fast being I don’t know my own damn name. I can’t blame him there. It stings though.

Tossing the packaging from my new toothbrush in the trash, I brush my teeth with vigor, being harsher on my gums than they deserve, but I’m wound up tight.
